Memorial Service at Liverpool Cathedral

At 15:00 on Sunday 3rd March a very fitting memorial service was held in Liverpool Cathedral in honour of the late Dr Noel Rawsthorne who died some five weeks earlier. Noel was Cathedral organist from 1955 until 1980 when he passed on the reigns to Ian Tracey.

Noel was cremated with his mortal remains being placed in a very special urn as designed by his son Chris Rawsthorne and David Wells of David Wells Organ Builders who provided the materials. Such a fine tribute, based upon an organ pipe on a sound-board, constructed and engraved by Mark Smith, a true craftsman from DWOB who Noel greatly admired. The urn was brought into the Cathedral by Noel’s daughter Chrissie and son Chris to gentle accompaniment by Ian Tracey.

The urn will be interred in the Cathedral in October at the Anniversary service where it will be placed alongside the memorial to Noel’s predecessor Dr Harry Goss-Custard.
